Dr Thomas Zgonis from San Antonio, Texas, USA!
Currently, Thomas Zgonis, DPM, FACFAS is the Director of Methodist Diabetic Foot and Ankle Institute (DFAI) and Fellowship Director of Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. He is board certified in both Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.
Dr. Zgonis is world-renowned for his expertise in diabetic foot and ankle reconstruction including the diabetic Charcot foot, amputation prevention and deformity correction with circular external fixation. He is a recognized leader, lecturer and author in the methods and application of the Ilizarov apparatus for external fixation and plastic surgical reconstruction of the diabetic foot and ankle. In addition to traveling extensively across the United States and around the world to educate physicians and surgeons with an interest in diabetic lower extremity reconstruction, he has published work in numerous textbook chapters, peer-reviewed journal articles, and is the textbook editor of Surgical Reconstruction of the Diabetic Foot and Ankle (1st and 2nd Editions), External Fixators of the Foot and Ankle, and Revisional and Reconstructive Surgery of the Foot and Ankle. He actively serves on the editorial board for multiple medical journals and is the Founder and Scientific Chairman of the annual Methodist International Lower Extremity Symposium (MILES) (www.miles-sa.com) in San Antonio, Texas, continuing his collaborative vision with multiple medical and surgical disciplines in the treatment of the diabetic foot.
His love for the game of soccer started back in his early childhood when he played youth and competitive amateur soccer in Grevena, Greece which eventually led him to play at the collegiate level for the University of Massachusetts Boston Men’s Soccer team in the United States of America. He was selected at the Little East Soccer Conference Team and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Select Team while playing for the University of Massachusetts Boston Men’s Soccer Team. To this date, he still holds one of the highest individual season records on scoring goals and assists. In addition, he was selected and played for the All-Massachusetts State Soccer Team in various State Cup Tournaments. He has continued to play competitive outdoor and indoor soccer in Massachusetts, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Texas. His combined skills as a soccer player, educator, mentor, and surgeon have led him to provide a unique and compassionate perspective as a youth soccer coach.
Dr Zgonis is a nationally licensed coach currently holding his USSF National D License. He has been actively coaching youth select soccer for the last 5 years with San Antonio Athletic FC (www.saathletic.com). His passion for the game and coaching at the youth level as a proud father, distinguish him as an individual who consistently promotes that “honesty, hard work, and humility” are the key components of success for both on and off the field.
